Biochar Symposium and Cholefestival: a brief review

The Biochar Symposium and Cholefestival, organised by c-werk, took place in Beatenberg from 2 - 4 September 2022 against an impressive backdrop. Carbon Standards International was also present as co-organiser of the symposium.

On Friday, the organisers welcomed various representatives of the biochar world to a study tour and then opened the Cholefestival with a joint aperitif. On Saturday, visitors were able to learn more about the topic of biochar during inspiring presentations. Well-known speakers spoke about the diversity of biochar: Kathleen Draper, Board Chair International Biochar Initiative recited about the biochar industry in America and worldwide as well as highlights and expectations in the market. Harald Bier, Head of Office at the European Biochar Industry Consortium (EBI) spoke about the development of the European biochar market from the perspective of the EBI. Matthias Matzenberger, Chief Technical Officer of Carbon Standards International, gave the audience an understanding of biochar in agriculture and presented the latest development status of the World-Climate Farm Tool. Stefan Baumann from FiBL (Research Institute of Organic Agriculture) also addressed the topic. Fabian Link, biochar specialist and product manager at Bioenergie Frauenfeld AG, spoke about the use of energy wood in zero-waste power plants. The day was rounded off by an arena discussion chaired by Mario Grossniklaus with guests such as Fredy Abächerli (Verora AG) and Martin Schmid (Generation-Carbon).

The symposium concluded on Sunday, 4 September 2022, with the presentation by Hans-Peter Schmid, Ithaka Institute on the technical possibilities of climate protection with the motto "It is neither technically nor economically a real problem to save the climate sustainably. It would only have to be done". The further intensive developments together with Carbon Standards International were also discussed. The event was rounded off with a workshop by Kathleen Draper and Astrid Habiba Kreszmeier on the topic of "Learning about Biochar", a reflection round with Alexandra Gavilano and time for exchange and consolidation in the World Café.

The symposium was accompanied by the Cholefestival, with food and drinks, market stalls, live music and the impressive ambience of the mountain world in Beatenberg. We were very pleased to welcome you at the presentations in the congress hall and/or at our Carbon Standards International stand. We thank you for the exciting exchange.
