Carbon sink standard

Global Biochar C-Sink Standard.

About the standard

The European Biochar Certificate (EBC) was the first system to certify biochar's ability to store carbon - an early, important step toward using biochar to help tackle climate change.

When the EBC C-Sink launched in 2020, it was the first certification standard of its kind - not just for biochar, but for any method of locking carbon away for the long term. Since then, hundreds of companies have certified and traded their biochar C-Sinks under the EBC, creating an entirely new carbon dioxide removal (CDR) industry. The Global Biochar C-Sink Standard is the next step in that story.

The standard recognises that the most stable part of biochar, once worked into soil or construction products, stores carbon permanently. The less stable part can be used to offset methane emissions over shorter periods.

Every C-Sink is tracked from the point of production to the point where the biochar is applied, and registered in the Global C-Sink Registry. Producers and processors account for their own emissions and must offset them, then C-Sinks can be issued in the Global C-Sink Registry.
