The TAK Standard is the first biochar standard with real-time digital monitoring. Under all other biochar standards, a certificate rests on a sample analyzed once a year and on an audit that visits once a year; what happened in between is declared by the producer and trusted by the certifier. Under TAK, the pyrolysis reactor temperature, the flue-gas temperature and oxygen content, and the mass of biochar produced are measured continuously and transmitted online as they are measured, and the carbon content is determined daily. The certifier does not reconstruct production after the fact; it watches it as it happens, and a batch is certified only for the periods for which the complete record exists.
The Standard for Technically Advanced Biochar Kilns (TAK)
The TAK Standard covers Biochar C-Sink production from closed-flame, professional pyrolysis equipment operated at an industrial level with a real-time dMRV system.
About the standard
The TAK Standard is developed by those who made biochar production and CDR a global reality. With deep knowledge of the technology in all its stages, from highly automated to artisanal, we know how to certify it without overclaiming, without double counting, and without copy-pasting from other standards. The science that established pyrolytic carbon as a persistent C-sink, the flame-curtain kilns that carried biochar production to farmers on every continent, and the certification frameworks the industry now works from were developed here - by Carbon Standards International and the Ithaka Institute, across two decades of field work and open-access, peer-reviewed publications. Others apply that science, use those kilns, and adapt those frameworks; TAK breaks the trail.
