Biochar for Global Climate Action
Carbon Standards International Expands into Asian Markets
Following a successful delegation trip to Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore, the Swiss-Austrian company is forging strategic partnerships to promote the European Biochar Certificate (EBC).
During a visit to Asia few weeks ago, Ueli Steiner (CEO) and Georg Gerharter (Board Member of the EASY-CERT group) made significant strides in advancing international standards for biochar.
Ueli Steiner and Georg Gerharter held productive discussions with authorities and industry leaders in Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore to promote the adoption of the respected European Biochar Certificate (EBC) in these emerging markets. “The takeaway from our exchange with international experts is clear – biochar is gaining recognition as a vital sustainable technology for carbon storage and a versatile industrial material,” said Ueli Steiner following the Global Biochar Conference 2025 in Nagoya, Japan, which drew participants from five continents.
In Taichung, Taiwan, existing cooperation with local company TCHAR was successfully strengthened. “Our discussions with government and business representatives focused on innovative uses of biochar in industrial products such as concrete, plastics, and even bicycle manufacturing. These applications not only reduce the carbon footprint of products but often improve their physical performance as well,” reported Georg Gerharter. Talks with officials in Singapore were equally promising. The city-state is placing increasing emphasis on carbon sinks as part of its climate strategy and aims to lead with robust, reliable standards.
One moment which we especially like to highlight was the event at the Lichiun Bookstore, where we planted mint in pots together with many children – using biochar as a soil additive. It was a truly special experience to see how engaged the next generation is with climate issues, and how inspiring and accessible knowledge transfer can be when it’s hands-on and shared with curiosity.
